S H O P P I N G
This page is mostly for food shopping, as opposed to picking up a little Chanel number.
EMERGENCY SUPPLIES
Central/Hogshill Stores: Just down the road before you get to Beaminster, opposite the school. Fine for milk, eggs (If our chickens are on a go-slow) and emergencies, not much cop for booze or food.
7.00am till 10.00pm (Sat and Sun 8.00am start).

BREAD
Wobbly Cottage Bakery – is in the centre of Broadwindsor Village.
Best sourdough ever, good pastries, great scotch eggs.
Open Tues – Sat 10:00-4:00pm. Get there early if you want sourdough as it goes fast.
General Bakery: Park in Beaminster square then walk back towards house for 40ft, bakery is on your left. Bread is okay, it comes from a local bakery in another village, most of the flour is local. Avoid the cakes if you care about cakes.

GROCERIES
Local – There’s a Co-Op in Beaminster that has most stuff and isn’t too outrageous.
There’s also a community store up the hill in Broadwindsor, though it’s thin on choice and a bit pricey.
Bridport – From Lidl to Waitrose and everything in-between. Biggest supermarket is Morrisons on the south side of town, cheapest food but not a particularly pleasant experience, and definitely cheapest petrol. For a big Tesco’s experience you’ll need to go to Yeovil (about 25 mins).

GROCERY DELIVERY
Waitrose, Tesco and Sainsbury’s all deliver to the house.

BUTCHER
The local butcher – Nick Tett is in the square in Beaminster and is excellent. The local butter is good and cheap and best bought here. He has a pretty well everything you’d expect, and if you’re lucky has good venison, rabbit and pheasant (in season) as well as all the usual. All the meat is local and he makes his own great sausages. His Duck pate converted a friend of mine from vegetarianism and he has good reasonable selection of local cheeses.
FRUIT & VEG
Fruit N’ Two Veg run by Anthony is our local in Beaminster, sells local produce and is very good.

DELIS
Beaminster: Brassica Mercantile on the square has an eclectic selection of food and the sort of lovely things you buy and then later wonder why.
Bridport: RISE Deli right on the main roundabout by the petrol station. Excellent light brown Sourdough – all bread from their own bakery, lots of yummy (and expensive) stuff. Wicked pastry/cakes and pretty good coffee, depending on who makes it. Highly recommend their Cast Iron Espresso beans or ground for taking home. Open 8am – 6pm 16-18 East Rd, Bridport, DT6 4AA.

FISH
Despite being more or less on the coast, fish (aside from the supermarket stuff) is not as easily available as you’d think, but the local catch is fabulous when you do track it down. There is a Fish van that visits Beaminster Square on Thursdays. Farther afield it’s worth seeking out Davy’s Locker, which is in Dreadnought Trading Estate, Bridport (DT6 5BU) - you can buy local Lyme Bay Scallops (a must) by the tray and his fish is great and cheaper than most.
There’s also a fishmonger (not cheap but all local and v good) in West Bay, the Wednesday food market in Bridport has a good fish guy, and there’s a good fish place in Lyme Regis and a great one in Beer both of which are supplied by local boats.

HEALTH FOOD
The nearest health food shop is in Bridport – Fruits of the Earth – 2A Victoria Grove, just round the corner from Costa on the main drag, and there’s another almost next to Waitrose. There’s another equally good one in South Street, which is also opposite Waste Not Want Not, a packaging free shop selling all sorts of lovely stuff without all the plastic

FARM SHOP
The best farm shop is at Washing Pool Farm (DT6 5HP) about 15-20 minutes away (drive up to Broadwindsor and go left as you hit the village towards Bridport, it’s on the left half a mile before town. A wide supply of local stuff, from Milk Vodka (made about 4 miles away and superb) to local veg, cakes, fruit, bread, meat, biscuits, jams you name it. There’s also an ok café and a small kids playground with some pigs and chickens to gawp at.

SUPERMARKETS
Morrisons: 15-20 mins - DT6 4SB
Lidl: 15 mins - DT6 3DJ
Waitrose Bridport: 17-20 mins - DT6 3QP – Parking behind which is good for all
Bridport shopping.
Waitrose Crewkene (bit bigger and has a Lidl nearby): 15-20mins - TA18 8DA

PETROL
Closest but most expensive and erratic opening times, Melplash – on the A3066 to Bridport – 10mins.
Cheapest – Morrisons - DT6 4SB – 20 mins.
Nearest with reliable opening times is the Garage on the first main roundabout you hit coming into Bridport on the Beminster road – DT6 4AA – 15 mins
Crewkerne – on the way into the town past the station. – 16 mins

CASH
Beaminster Co-Op has a machine inside the door. Otherwise plenty of cashpoints in Bridport.

BEER & WINE
The Co-Op in Beaminster has a reasonable selection if you’re not too fussy, as of course do the supermarkets.
If you want a much better selection, then the brewery Palmers has a wine shop (also selling their beer of course) with a very wide selection. Palmers is more or less opposite Morrisons on South Street in Bridport and is an utter joy for wine and ale lovers.
Also highly recommended wine shop run by a guy who knows his stuff is Wessex Wines in Bridport: St. Michaels Trading Estate Unit 88, Bridport DT6 3RR.
